Chanterelle — Positive ID

Funnel-shaped, apricot-scented, and one of the more rewarding foraging targets — but it has a genuinely toxic lookalike that grows in the exact same habitat.

Dangerous Lookalikes — Positive ID Required

Jack O'Lantern (Omphalotus) — toxic, do not confuse: Jack O'Lantern has true, sharp, closely-spaced orange gills (not blunt ridges) and grows in dense clusters directly on wood or buried roots — true chanterelles grow singly or scattered from soil, not clustered on wood. Jack O'Lantern is also bioluminescent (faintly glows in true darkness) — chanterelles never do.
False chanterelle (Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca): Less dangerous than Jack O'Lantern (causes GI upset, not the more serious toxicity profile) but still a real mimic — thinner flesh, true (not forked) gills, and no apricot smell.
