Dandelion — Positive ID
One of the most recognizable and genuinely useful edible weeds on the property — leaves, flowers, and root are all usable.
Positive ID Features
- Bright yellow ray-floret flowers on a hollow, leafless stem with milky sap.
- Deeply toothed leaves in a basal rosette; puffball seed head.
- Deep taproot, white inside when broken.
Edible Parts
- Leaves — raw or cooked, young leaves are less bitter.
- Flowers — syrup, jelly, wine, tea, fritters.
- Root — roasted as a coffee substitute, or tea/tincture.
Cautions
- Avoid if allergic to ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds, daisies, or other Asteraceae-family plants.
- May interact with diuretics, blood thinners, and lithium medications.
- Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding due to lack of safety data.
