Plant ID
Elderberry — Positive ID
Cooked berries and flowers are a real, common wild-food source — but the raw plant and its toxic lookalike both need respect first.
Dangerous Lookalikes — Positive ID Required
- Pokeweed (Phytolacca americana) — toxic, do not confuse: Fast field test is stem woodiness: elderberry has a woody brown stem with rough bark and compound serrated leaflets. Pokeweed has a fleshy, smooth, red/magenta stem and simple smooth-edged oval leaves, with berries in drooping (not flat-topped) clusters. Elderberry is safe cooked; pokeweed is toxic in every part.
