• False morel (Gyromitra species) — toxic, do not confuse: False morel has a lobed, brain-like or wrinkled reddish-brown cap that can superficially resemble a true morel at a glance, but its stem is NOT hollow — it's chambered or cottony inside. Always cut the stem lengthwise before eating anything that looks like a morel. False morel also contains gyromitrin, which converts to monomethylhydrazine (MMH) — the same compound used as a rocket fuel component — a genuinely serious toxin. Some cultures parboil false morels to reduce toxicity before eating them, but that's a real risk in itself since MMH is volatile and can be inhaled during cooking in a poorly ventilated space. Don't treat any 'safe preparation method' claim for false morel as reliable.
