Oyster Mushroom — Positive ID

Side-attached, scalloped, mild anise scent — one of the more beginner-friendly wild mushrooms to learn, with fewer serious lookalikes than most.

Lookalikes to Know

  • Jack O'Lantern (Omphalotus): Both can grow on wood, but Jack O'Lantern has true, sharp orange gills and grows in dense clustered mounds — oyster mushrooms are pale/gray-tan with the decurrent-gill, fan-shaped form described below. Lower confusion risk than the chanterelle/Jack O'Lantern pairing, but check gill color and cluster pattern before harvesting.
