Porcini — Positive ID
Thick, club-shaped stem and a nutty smell — but the source's one-line description was missing the single most important bolete safety check.
Dangerous Lookalikes — Positive ID Required
- Toxic red-pored / blue-staining boletes — toxic, do not confuse: This was missing from the source entirely and is the real safety gap: check pore color and bruising reaction before eating any bolete. Red or orange pores, or flesh that stains blue quickly when cut or bruised, are the classic warning signs of a toxic bolete species — true porcini have pale, whitish-to-yellowish pores (not red) and flesh that stays white or only slowly, faintly discolors.
