True Pine (Genus Pinus) — Positive ID Card

The real starting point for any pine-based foraging — bundle count is the single most reliable pine indicator, and it rules out the one genuinely dangerous lookalike.

Dangerous Lookalikes — Positive ID Required

True fir (Abies) and spruce (Picea): Fir and spruce needles attach singly to the twig, not in bundles. Spruce needles are stiff, sharp, and roll easily between fingers; fir needles are flatter, softer, and don't roll. Neither is toxic, but neither is pine either — a mix-up costs you the wrong flavor and texture, not your health.
Yew (Taxus) — toxic, do not confuse: Seriously toxic — every part except the red aril around the seed contains taxine alkaloids, cardiotoxic and potentially fatal. Yew needles attach singly, flat, dark green, and soft, in flat sprays. It does not produce woody cones — it produces small red berry-like arils instead. If it's not clearly bundled and doesn't have a real woody cone, it is not pine.
