Beehive & Pollinator System
Bees are pollination infrastructure first and a honey source second — a garden with an active hive sees 20–50% higher yields, a value that outstrips the honey itself.
A managed honeybee colony — one queen, tens of thousands of workers, seasonal drones — housed in a top-bar, Langstroth, or Warré hive. A top-bar hive is the better starting point: bees build natural comb, extraction is a simple crush-and-strain rather than a centrifuge, and it's gentler on the colony, at the cost of somewhat lower honey yield (25–40 lbs/year vs. 40–60+ for Langstroth).
Setup
- Placement: full sun (6+ hours), wind protection, entrance facing east so morning sun warms the colony for flight, elevated 18 inches off the ground.
- Clearance: at least 3 feet of clear space in front of the entrance for the flight path — don't put it where people walk.
- Install in spring (April–May) from a package or nuc; feed sugar water for the first 1–2 weeks while the colony establishes and draws comb.
- No pesticides, anywhere the bees forage — herbicides and insecticides are a hard deal-breaker once you're keeping bees, not a minor inconvenience.
Seasonal Rhythm
- Spring: colony builds up fast; minimal inspection, supplement with sugar water only if nectar flow is slow.
- Early summer: peak nectar flow and population — mostly leave the hive alone and let it work.
- Late summer: monitor Varroa mites closely and begin checking food stores ahead of winter.
- Fall: harvest surplus honey, leaving 60–80 lbs of stores in cold climates (40–50 in mild ones), treat for Varroa, reduce the entrance against robbing.
- Winter: no inspections — the cluster is too disruptive to open. Just verify stores periodically and add fondant if they're running low.
Caveats
- Varroa mite management is not optional — most colonies in most regions die without an annual treatment; accept this going in.
- First-year colonies typically produce little to no surplus honey — the colony is building itself, not producing yet, and that's normal.
- 10–40% winter colony loss is common even with good management — plan for occasional replacement rather than treating a lost hive as a failure.
- Where bears are present, hives need real protection (electric fencing) — a bear will destroy a hive for the brood, not just the honey.
Skip Entirely
Spraying any herbicide or insecticide near a property with an active hive — it undoes the entire point of keeping bees and can wipe out the colony outright.
