The Sídhe

A greenhouse built into the hillside itself — earth walls hold the day's heat and release it slowly overnight, extending the growing season without burning anything.

Why the name

Named for the Sídhe (pronounced "shee"), the hill-dwelling fair folk of Irish legend, whose halls are said to exist inside the earth of a hillside itself rather than on top of it — a real building actually built into a hillside, for once.

A greenhouse built into a hillside or berm, with earth walls on three or more sides for thermal mass and a single glass or glazed roof for solar gain. Earth mass absorbs heat during the day and releases it slowly at night, reducing heating swings versus a standalone glass structure and extending the growing season without mechanical heat.

Why It Works

A known passive-solar, earth-sheltered greenhouse principle, documented under the name "walipini" (pit greenhouse, originally Bolivian/Aymara) — ground below the frost line holds a stable temperature, and earth-bermed walls act as a thermal battery.

Open Questions

  • Site-specific: how does this fit actual mountain slope and orientation for solar gain?
  • Drainage plan for the berm sides.
  • Roof-only glazing vs. partial wall glazing tradeoff.
  • Ventilation strategy for summer overheating.
