Wax & Wood Shaving Fire Starters

Wax-saturated wood shavings in an egg carton mold — a reliable 8–10 minute burn to get a fire going without lighter fluid.

Materials

  • 1 cup wood shavings (pine, cedar, or sawdust)
  • 1 cup wax (paraffin or leftover candle wax)
  • Wicks (optional)
  • Egg carton as a mold

The Process

  1. Melt the wax in a double boiler over low heat.
  2. Fill each cup of an egg carton with wood shavings.
  3. Pour melted wax over the shavings until well saturated.
  4. Add a wick in the center of each, if using.
  5. Let cool and harden completely.
  6. Store in a jar or bag; separate the egg-carton cups when ready to use.

Performance

Roughly 8–10 minutes of burn time per starter — enough to get kindling going in a campfire, fireplace, wood stove, fire pit, or grill.

Caveats

"All natural/non-toxic" only holds if you use leftover candle wax rather than paraffin — paraffin is a petroleum product, and burning it indoors deserves the same ventilation you'd give any other fire, not a free pass because the starter itself is homemade.
