The White Thang
Solar's real cost driver isn't the panels, it's the battery bank needed to bridge cloudy stretches — a well-sited creek delivers steady, near-continuous output no solar array can match on its own, cutting how much buffer the rest of the power stack has to carry. Pairs with the Snawfus Hearth's winter leg and the property's solar/battery hub under the redundant power stacking rule: no single system has to be the hero.
Why the name
Named for the White Thang, a pale, powerful creature reported moving through the more remote hollows of West Virginia — rarely seen, but strong enough to leave no doubt something real was there. A creek that can run a house's power around the clock, quietly, out past where anyone's watching, earns the same reputation.
Real signal path, not simplified: a weir-style intake with a debris screen draws off the creek → a settling forebay drops sediment out before the water gets pressurized → a pressurized penstock carries it to a Pelton wheel (an impulse turbine, correctly matched to high-head/low-flow creek sites) → the spinning wheel drives a generator (stator coils, rotor magnets) → charge controller → battery bank → inverter → AC loads. Spent water isn't consumed — it exits through a tailrace back into the same stream downstream of the intake, a non-consumptive run-of-river design that matters for the water-rights case below.
Tier Ladder
- Settler — Creek Tap: simple pipe intake, single small Pelton wheel, trickle-charge supplement to the solar/battery hub rather than a real standalone leg.
- Homesteader — Screened Intake: adds the weir-style intake, debris screen, and settling forebay — protects the turbine from the silt abrasion that's the classic real-world micro-hydro failure point.
- Foreman — Full Creek System (baseline spec below): complete intake-to-inverter chain, sized against an actual measured head/flow survey of the site, real primary-or-backup power leg alongside solar.
- Monticello — Pond-Fed Reservoir: engineers its own head via an impoundment instead of living with whatever a wild creek offers — controllable head/flow, plus a drought and hard-freeze buffer a shallow exposed intake doesn't have.
- Mythic — The White Thang: dual-turbine redundancy, cast bronze fittings, fully integrated into the property's full power stack (solar + hydro + battery + wood heat) so no single leg needs to hit its best-case number to deliver reliable power.
Technical Specifications (Foreman tier baseline)
- Turbine: Pelton wheel (impulse type) — correct pairing for a high-head, low-flow creek site; other sites/flow profiles call for Kaplan, Francis, or crossflow instead
- Intake: weir-style with debris screen; non-consumptive — tailrace returns water to the same stream downstream of the intake
- Sediment control: settling forebay between intake and penstock, required — unscreened fine silt abrades Pelton nozzle and bucket surfaces over time
- Penstock: pressurized pipe sized to the site's measured head and flow, with a pressure relief/bypass valve (prevents water-hammer damage on sudden turbine shutdown) and buried below frost line
- Sizing formula: Power (watts) ≈ head (ft) × flow (gpm) × 0.18 × efficiency (typically 50–70% for small systems) — run against a real site head/flow survey, never against a generic output table
Specialist Sign-Offs Required Before Construction
- Water rights / DEP environmental review — WV is a riparian-rights state (generally more permissive than western prior-appropriation states), but intake screening for fish protection, minimum-instream-flow requirements, and diversion structures can still trigger review depending on stream size, even for a non-consumptive design
- Structural/civil engineer — penstock anchoring and intake weir structure
- Electrical — generator, charge controller, and battery integration, confirmed against the existing solar/battery hub's real capacity so hydro output doesn't go to waste or overrun what the hub can store
- Dam safety review (Monticello+ pond-reservoir tier only) — WV dam safety regulations key off dam height and impoundment volume; small farm ponds are typically exempt, but a pond sized to deliver real hydro head may cross that threshold
