Numerology

Where tarot, runes, and the I Ching all use physical randomness (a shuffle, a cast, a coin toss), numerology uses none — every number is derived directly and repeatably from a name and birth date. This guide covers the Pythagorean system, the most common Western numerology framework, named for the ancient Greek belief that numbers underlie the structure of reality (a separate, older Chaldean system, Middle Eastern in origin, assigns different letter-number values and is used less commonly in English-language numerology — worth knowing it exists if a chart doesn't match this one). Letters map to numbers 1-9 in repeating order: A/J/S=1, B/K/T=2, C/L/U=3, D/M/V=4, E/N/W=5, F/O/X=6, G/P/Y=7, H/Q/Z=8, I/R=9. Reduction means repeatedly summing a number's digits until it becomes a single digit — 1987 becomes 1+9+8+7=25, then 2+5=7 — except when a reduction lands exactly on 11, 22, or 33 (a Master Number), which is traditionally left unreduced and read as an intensified version of its root (2, 4, or 6 respectively; a Master 33 is rarer by construction than 11 or 22, and some numerologists debate whether it should be treated identically to them at all). A full profile is 5 separate calculations: Life Path (from the full birth date — overall direction and this lifetime's central lessons, the single most emphasized number), Expression/Destiny (from all letters of the full birth name — natural talents and how someone is built to express themselves), Soul Urge/Heart's Desire (from vowels only in the birth name — private inner motivation, regardless of what's shown outwardly), Personality (from consonants only — the impression made on others before they're known well), and Birthday (the day of the month born — a specific trait layered on top of the Life Path). Most numerologists use the full name exactly as it appears on the birth certificate for Expression, Soul Urge, and Personality, on the idea that the given name carries the original imprint; a separate calculation on a current or chosen name is sometimes done alongside it, but treated as secondary. The same core meanings for numbers 1-9 apply across all 5 number types — a Life Path 3 and an Expression 3 share the same underlying theme, just applied to a different question.
