Οἰδίπους Τύραννος — Oedipus Rex

A man spends the whole play hunting a murderer, not knowing the hunt is a mirror.

PATIENT

Oedipus Rex

COMPOSED

c. 429 BCE

FORM

Tragedy, single act

SETTING

Thebes, one day

CHIEF COMPLAINT

Thebes presents with a plague. The king launches a murder investigation to cure it — unaware that he is both the detective and the killer.

HISTORY OF PRESENT ILLNESS

Thebes is dying of plague, and an oracle says the city will not heal until Laius's murderer — still unpunished, years later — is found and cast out. Oedipus, the reigning king who years earlier won the throne by solving the Sphinx's riddle, vows to solve this case with the same intensity, unaware he is investigating himself. The play is structured as a single, tightening interrogation: a prophecy, a shepherd's testimony, Jocasta's mounting horror, each witness closing off one more escape route, until Oedipus confirms he killed his father at a crossroads and married his mother. Jocasta hangs herself. Oedipus blinds himself with the pins from her robe and asks to be exiled.

REVIEW OF SYSTEMS

FATE / PROPHECY

Inescapable, and worse — fulfilled precisely by the actions taken to dodge it. Every move Oedipus makes to outrun the prophecy is a step toward it.

SIGHT / BLINDNESS

The play's controlling image. Oedipus has working eyes and is blind to the truth; the prophet Tiresias is physically blind and sees everything. Oedipus only truly 'sees' after he blinds himself.

HAMARTIA (THE FATAL FLAW)

Not villainy — the same relentless need to know that solved the Sphinx's riddle is what drives the investigation into his own guilt.

MÍASMA (POLLUTION)

Thebes's plague is treated as a physical symptom of a moral wound. The city doesn't heal until the source is named and expelled.

PHYSICAL EXAM — STYLE & STRUCTURE

  • Dramatic irony is the entire engine of the play — the audience knows Oedipus's identity from the myth before the curtain rises; the tension is watching him find out.
  • Unity of time, place, and action — one day, one location, one continuous investigation. Aristotle later used this play as his model for the form.
  • Violence happens offstage — Jocasta's suicide, Oedipus's self-blinding — and arrives to the audience secondhand, through a messenger's account.
  • The Chorus of Theban elders narrates and reacts in real time, functioning as the play's conscience and its clock.

ASSESSMENT & PLAN

Aristotle built his theory of tragedy in the Poetics largely off this one play — it's where "hamartia" and "catharsis" get their working definitions. Short and dense enough to read in a single sitting, which is also how it was meant to be watched. Fagles moves fast and plays well read aloud; Fitzgerald is a strong middle ground; Anne Carson's versions of Greek tragedy are worth it later if you want something stranger and more contemporary in register.

THE IRONY LEDGER

Dramatic irony only works because two things are true in the theater at once. Tap a line to see what Oedipus believes, next to what the audience — and by the end, Oedipus himself — already knows.
