Lasagna Bed (Sheet Mulch) Method
No-till bed prep that kills the grass underneath instead of digging it out — layer cardboard and alternating green/brown mulch straight over the old lawn or shrub bed.
Status
Standard, widely-documented no-till bed-prep method — not a single pinned source, general horticultural technique.
A no-till way to turn an existing lawn, shrub bed, or overgrown patch into a growing bed without digging out the grass or shrubs first. Smothers what's underneath instead, and builds real soil as it breaks down.
Layers, Bottom to Top
- Mow or cut back whatever's growing there as low as it'll go — no need to dig it out, this method smothers it in place.
- Cardboard or several layers of newspaper, overlapped with no gaps — this is the light-blocking layer that kills the grass/weeds underneath. Remove tape and glossy inserts from cardboard first; plain corrugated breaks down cleanly.
- "Brown" layer (carbon-rich): straw, dry leaves, shredded paper — several inches thick.
- "Green" layer (nitrogen-rich): grass clippings, kitchen scraps, coffee grounds, fresh-pulled weeds (before they seed) — a thinner layer than the brown.
- Repeat brown/green layers until the bed is 12-18 inches tall before settling — it compresses significantly as it breaks down.
- Top with a few inches of finished compost or garden soil — this is what gets planted into.
Timing
Built in fall and left over winter, a lasagna bed is fully broken down and ready to plant into by spring with no further work. Built right before the growing season, it can still be planted immediately — dig small pockets through to the cardboard layer, fill each pocket with compost or soil, and plant directly into those pockets while the rest of the bed continues breaking down around the plants.
Why It Works
The cardboard blocks light to whatever's underneath, killing it without digging — the roots decompose in place and add organic matter rather than getting hauled off as waste. The alternating brown/green layers compost in place, so the bed keeps improving its own soil for years rather than needing amendment.
