Timber Truss
Rustic and warm — blends into a wooded property.
- • Can use reclaimed or rough-cut lumber for real cost savings
- • Fast to assemble relative to masonry or gabion
- • Natural look that fits a wooded or cabin-style property
- • Shortest real lifespan of the three unless built with genuinely rot-resistant lumber (cedar, pressure-treated) — untreated wood rots
- • Needs real drainage behind it, or trapped water rots it faster than exposure alone would
- • Not generally rated for very tall walls without real engineering
Can be the cheapest option using reclaimed/on-site lumber, more if buying rot-resistant stock.
Geopolymer Interlocking Bricks
Clean and modern — uniform, consistent coursing.
- • Interlocking system, no mortar needed
- • Ties into the same material family as the site's own Ogopogo build system — real synergy if the property already has (or is getting) Ogopogo decking or walls
- • Good compressive strength, lower environmental impact than portland cement
- • Newer material with less long-term field data than traditional stone or concrete
- • Still needs proper base prep and drainage behind it, same as any wall — the material doesn't skip that step
Moderate — comparable to a cast concrete block system.
Weep Channels — Every Method Needs This
Whichever method you pick, real drainage behind the wall (gravel backfill, weep holes or channels letting water through instead of pooling) is what actually determines whether it holds. Hydrostatic pressure from trapped water is the number one cause of retaining wall failure across every material on this page, not the material choice itself.
