The Lynx
A working mule for the person who still walks the trap line — narrow enough to thread timber, light enough for one person to right solo, silent enough that the deer never knows you were there.
The Kawasaki Mule misses the point of its own name. It's a $12,000+, 1,400-lb machine that needs a trailer to move and a dealer to fix. The Lynx is the actual mule — narrow, light, capable, honest, and completely understood by the person who built it. Design brief: full-season hunting and trapping across steep WV mountain terrain, tight timber, and flat river-bottom walking. That terrain sets the whole spec — narrow enough to thread timber, light enough for power-to-weight on grades, low-geared for crawl capability, and four-wheel drive at minimum.
Why electric
- Silent approach — electric motors are essentially inaudible at low speed, so the trap line gets run at dawn without blowing out the area, and deer that would bolt from a gas engine keep feeding.
- Instant torque — full torque from zero RPM means climbing a steep grade instead of bogging or stalling through a shift.
- No exhaust scent — a real hunting advantage no gas UTV can offer; wipe the frame with scent eliminator same as the rest of the gear and the machine disappears from a deer's nose.
- Regenerative braking — descending a grade turns the motor into a generator, recharging the pack while adding engine-braking control without touching the brakes.
The weight target — under 400 lbs
This is the constraint that drives every other decision: under 400 lbs is the line where one fit person can right the machine solo on a slope if it tips. Over that line, it's a call for help or an overnight wait. Every heavy default gets substituted: chromoly (or 4130 aircraft steel, or aluminum) tube instead of mild steel, fabricated sheet/tube instead of cast components, no cab/doors/roof/stereo — a mule has a back and four legs, not creature comforts — and, biggest single lever, a 48V 60Ah lithium pack (35–40 lbs) instead of the 120+ lb lead-acid equivalent that same capacity would cost.
Four independent hub motors (one per wheel) replace the whole differential/driveshaft/gearbox stack. If one wheel lifts on a steep side-hill, the other three keep pulling — the controller manages torque distribution electronically per wheel, which beats any mechanical 4WD system's traction at a fraction of the weight.

The core build

Hunting-specific features
- Creep mode — a programmed 2–3 mph walking-pace setting for final approach to a stand or moving through timber near animals, at barely-perceptible motor noise.
- Wrist-lanyard kill switch — the machine stops if the rider separates from it on a grade, the same way a real mule stopped when nobody was on it.
- Deer-drag rear receiver hitch — a drag sled or game cart hooks straight to it, so a deer comes out of the timber under electric power instead of on the hunter's back.
- Trap-line configuration — front rack carries the trap bag and bait, rear bed carries sets already pulled; the stated goal is running 20 traps in the time it used to take to run 8.
- Silent 12V winch — mounted to the front receiver; pulls the machine out if stuck, helps load a deer onto the bed, and helps one person right the machine solo on steep terrain.
- Field charging — trickle-charges overnight in camp off a small generator or a solar setup at the truck, so range isn't a hard limit on a multi-day hunt.
The one-man-right-it spec
Under 400 lbs is only half the righting story — the frame geometry has to actually give a person something to grab. Roll-bar height is engineered as the righting handle: 36–40 inches above the seat, tall enough for real leverage but not so tall it works against the person pushing. The machine naturally tips to a 45-degree rest point on the roll bar, and from there one person on the uphill side can push it back upright. The roll bar doubles as the mount point for a small LED light bar (pre-dawn trap-line runs), a gun or bow rack, and a GPS mount.
