Mullein — Positive ID

A tall, fuzzy-leaved biennial with real food/tea use in the leaves and flowers — but the seeds are toxic, not a food source, despite one source pin's claim.

Dangerous Lookalikes — Positive ID Required

Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea) — toxic, do not confuse: Foxglove is toxic and can be fatal — it's a documented lookalike for mullein at the first-year rosette stage. Mullein's rosette is very thick, densely woolly (felted), silver-gray, and soft, with smooth edges; foxglove's first-year rosette is also soft and hairy but greener and wrinkled, with net veining and scalloped edges, so softness alone does not rule it out. Comfrey, not foxglove, is the rough, bristly one. Confirm which growth stage you're looking at before treating any rosette as mullein.
